"Those guys have no taste." [Mar. 8th, 2007|05:36 pm]
Spending the last two days (so far) trying to find a floor lamp that isn't ass-ugly has illuminated me to the vast aesthetic deficiencies of our current consumer culture.

Spicy congestion.

(Obviously, this was not the desired result.)

Don't leave home without it. [Sep. 15th, 2006|11:51 pm]
It's How to Spot a Jap, a War Department comic from WWII. It originally appeared in the first edition of the Pocket Guide to China, and was for some reason removed from all subsequent printings.

Also, the identifiers it mentions are reasonably accurate, although pretty offensively portrayed in the illustrations. But if you want to talk about racism in WWII, Japan "beats" the U.S. hands down.

"When danger threatened him he never got hurt; he knew just what to do." [Jul. 10th, 2006|10:10 pm]
[Current Music |"Sweethearts" - Camper Van Beethoven]

I was going to write a big long post, but I can't write as fast as I can think, so my thoughts to get all jumbled together. It pisses me of something fierce. The short of it is that I've thought for a long time that WWIII would start in Asia, and it's a lot closer to happening than I would like it to. If you want to know why, ask a question and I'll try to give an answer.

I prefer the term 'artifical person' myself. [May. 6th, 2006|01:08 pm]
The people at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) have a problem; How to keep people away for 10,000 years. A lot can change in that time, as Jon Lomberg explains:

All we can guess about the future inhabitants of the area near WIPP is that they are human—unless they are cyborgs… Once you have people with augmented brains or genetically engineered minds with enhanced perceptions, you can't be sure how human they will be.

Of course, there is the obligatory robot scenario:

Others predicted the invention of self-guided robotic "mole miners" that would penetrate the site from the side or below. In a scenario set in the year 11991, robotic slaves are infected with a computer virus that compels them to override their safety programming as they compulsively drill and construct mine shafts.

No idea is too silly to merit serious thought:

Their report combines dry analysis and projections worthy of sci-fi disaster films, including massive climate change and feminist corporations that disbelieve WIPP warnings because they were written by men.

Ten bucks says one of those will become a Sci-Fi Channel original movie.

I was looking at the website for Chery Automobile (a Red Chinese car company) today. Next year they're going to start selling their cars in the U.S., and I wish them luck. But I think they'll need to change a bit:

Express yourself! QQ is a car that dances to fashion beats. It is like you: young, peppy and cool. Wherever you are heading, QQ oozes personality and sparkle. It is just for loads of fun!

Here's a tip: You have to say those things without explicitly saying those things.

It sucks having a really cool dream and then figuring out all the stuff your subconscious ripped off [Mar. 9th, 2006|09:24 am]
[Current Music |"Feel Good Inc (Single Edit)" - Gorillaz]

I guess for me it's worse, because I usually have really dull dreams where I'm explaining hash collisions to people or stuff like that. I just had a really good one, then I realized it was just a mash-up of the virus from Snow Crash and Sandkings. The non-ripped-off parts were pretty good, though.

"One of these things is not like the other . . . " [Feb. 3rd, 2006|01:04 pm]
[Current Music |"Girlfriend is Better" - Talking Heads]

I was at the library the other day, and I found a book that looked interesting. It's The Rise of the Computer State: The Threat to Our Freedoms, Our Ethics and Our Democratic Process, by David Burnham. It's from 1983, and the only mention of the personal computer is a dismissive paragraph in the beginning. I'm only two chapters in, so I don't really have an opinion of it yet. I did find the about the author blurb to be a little odd; can you guess why?

David Burnham has been a reporter for UPI, Newsweek and CBS and has worked for over ten years for the New York Times in both New York and Washington. His articles about police corruption in New York City, based partly on information from Frank Serpico and David Durk, led to the formation of the Knapp Commission and reform of the police department. While working on a story about health and safety problems at the Kerr-McGee plutonium factory in Oklahoma, Burnham arranged a meeting with Karen Silkwood, a worker at the plant. Ms. Silkwood died under mysterious circumstances in a car crash on her way to that meeting. Over the years Burnham has won numerous awards, including the George Polk Award for Public Service, the Society of the Silurians Award for Reportorial Enterprise, the Page One Award for Crusading Journalism of the Newspaper Guild of New York and the Golden Typewriter Award of the New York Press Club. Burnham now lives in Washington, DC.
